History and Background
In March 2010, the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) announced plans for constructing a new international standard cricket stadium in Mullanpur village of Mohali district. Spanning over 41.95 acres and costing approximately ₹230 crore (US$29 million), the stadium was envisioned as a replacement to the aging IS Bindra PCA Stadium. It was finally completed and opened in 2021 and named after Maharaja Yadavindra Singh, the ninth and last ruling Maharaja of Patiala.
The Mullanpur Cricket Stadium, though new, has quickly risen in status, hosting domestic tournaments and becoming the official home ground for Punjab Kings in the IPL from 2024 onwards.
Pitch Report- Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium
Nature of the Pitch
The pitch at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Cricket Stadium offers a balanced surface that can favor both batsmen and bowlers depending on weather and match conditions.
- Batting-friendly surface: The pitch tends to play true with even bounce, making it easier for batsmen to play their shots.
- Seam movement early on: Pacers can extract some movement in the first few overs, especially in day games.
- Spin in middle overs: As the match progresses, the dryness of the surface allows spinners to come into play.
- Sand-based outfield: The sand-laden outfield enhances stability but makes maintenance difficult. However, it ensures quick drying, especially useful during the monsoon season.
Drainage System
A key feature of the stadium is its herringbone drainage system, which ensures water is cleared within 25-30 minutes after rain — a major advantage in rain-prone areas.

The Legacy of IS Bindra Stadium and the Rise of Mullanpur
The original IS Bindra PCA Stadium in Mohali has served Indian cricket well, having hosted multiple World Cup matches and Virat Kohli’s 100th Test. However, with growing demands for enhanced facilities, the Mullanpur Stadium marks a new chapter for Punjab cricket. Visionary former PCA and BCCI president I S Bindra initiated this development back in 2010. Over the years, the Mullanpur ground has transitioned from a domestic venue to an international host and a major IPL center, especially after 2024.
